Los Angeles, CA asked in Criminal Law for California

Q: Is it legal for a property owner to assault someone with a pipe wrench, hold knife to their thoat if he caught in yard?

A man came running out of the bushes at a property I thought I had permission to be on weilding a big pipe wrench and yelling "I'll kill you!" I turned to run and tripped so I just covered my head .he then stuck a knife to my throat and threatened to kill me if I moved. He then ordered my friend to get on the ground or he would "bury" the knife in my throat.I kept telling him we had permission but he kept yelling that we had stolen his cars. He then kicked my friend repeatedly in his ribs and back, forced us to get up walk 20ft and forced us to the ground again.the man's buddy had shown up during all this with a shotgun so we couldn't try to run. Me and my friend were arrested for general burglary. This happened on a property that was unoccupied, the house was vacant and empty.the first that this man saw of me I was just standing in his yard looking around because someone had yelled call police from down where my car was parked,30 seconds later he just came running at me out of the bush

Why would you have permission to be there?

What time was it?

You live on the block?

How were you dresses?

Any weapons nor tools on you?

Any warning signs?
