Q: What happens if I was ticketed for speeding in KY and don't have proof of vehicle registration, but it wasn't my car?
I was driving my friend's car through Kentucky last year and got pulled over for speeding. She didn't have her vehicle registration. I was not given a fine, but told I'd have to watch an online training and provide proof of registration. By the time I went to do so, my friend didn't have the registration on file and had an entirely new vehicle. Kentucky courts tell me I cannot pay the citation without showing proof of registration, but there is no way for me to access proof.
Now my (Ohio) driver's license is suspended for nonpayment of this citation, and they are telling me I have to file a motion to re-open the case and drive to court in Kentucky... But I still will not have the documentation they need.
What can I expect to happen, or is there any way around this barrier?
A: You can hire a lawyer and have them present proof to the Court that the vehicle was registered in someone else's name. You should be able to get some sort of record from Ohio Department of Transportation.
A: You still have to provide proof of registration or you’ll have to plead guilty to it.
