Grandville, MI asked in Animal / Dog Law for Michigan

Q: I have a non jury trial regarding a dog I saved running at large for the owner appearing well after and wanting it back

I found a dog running at large and saved it from being struck by a vehicle. He had no collar, identification, or microchip. I did everything in my power to find his owners, multiple ads, including taking him to the shelter and them posting their own ads. Well after a month after having this dog, the owner suddenly appears and wants him back. At this point, I had taken him to the vet for long standing issues that needed addressed after being advised by the shelter that i could make him officially my dog. I’ve cared for the dog now for 6 months, he’s adapted to my home and bonded with both myself and other dogs in the home. I believe you have due diligence to perform when you lose an animal and that it was not done by his original owners to find this dog. There was every effort made for me to find his owners and seemingly none for them to find him. I spent several hours per day searching or posting ads, etc. Now, this has gone civil and a non jury trial is coming up. I need advice please

A: I know being subject to a trial can be scary and intimidating, but I must say, you have a story, and the way you just told it suggests that you're probably more prepared for trial than you may think.
