Chicago, IL asked in Bankruptcy for Illinois

Q: Can I file for chapter 7 bankruptcy after a resignation?

I am being forced into resignation from my job after 20 years or I can be fired, which means I would not be hired in my profession again. I was planning on filing for chapter 13, but now is it possible to file for chapter 7?

Can I file chapter 7 after a resignation?

A: Judge Alexander Paskay, who said on the Florida Bankruptcy Court in Tampa for years used to say "you can own the Eifel Tower and the Brooklyn Bridge free and clear and owe one soul one cent and you can file." Being employed has little to do with your filing, but your employment status may well dictate your chapter.

Go see a good bankruptcy lawyer for an analysis of your situation. That can't be done here.

Good Luck
