Q: I would like to know Iowa traffic laws for approaching a ice cream truck
A: Know what flavor you want and have your money out. No, seriously, Ice Cream trucks attract a lot of young children and others that are not paying attention to vehicles. Potential serious bodily injury or harm from vehicle/ pedestrian collisions. You can do a google search for Iowa Vehicle Code- ice cream trucks to see if there is any particular law. There are laws relating to school busses in almost every jurisdiction, but ice cream? I just don't know. This case arises under traffic ticket law. You need to discuss with an attorney in your jurisdiction that specializes in this kind of law. Thank you for using Justia, Ask a Lawyer.
A:
An Iowa attorney could advise best, but this is an evolving issue nationwide. Different jurisdictions have taken different measures for the safety of children in the vicinity of ice cream trucks - including blinking lights, protocols for passing ice cream trucks, restrictions in high-traffic areas, etc.
This is a work in progress, so it would probably be best to consult with state and local lawmakers, as well as state and local agencies that would be on the leading edge of the issue - ranging from departments of motor vehicles to public safety agencies.
You could also check with federal lawmakers and representatives in Iowa as well to see if they could provide guidance - I know there has been a push for heightened federal measures in this area. Good luck
