Clifton Park, NY asked in Gov & Administrative Law for New York

Q: Can I legally put a neighbor's mail back in his roadside mailbox?

If wind blows a neighbor's mail from his open roadside mailbox onto my property, is it legal for me to put it back in his mailbox?

A: From a common sense standpoint, it would be a courteous and polite thing to do in being a good neighbor. But from a legal standpoint (since you ask "legally,"), if your neighbor might not appreciate people on their property, it could technically be considered trespass or privacy violation. So no one could offer a reply that could technically encourage trespass. It could depend on the neighbor and what their reaction might be. Good luck

A: It's generally considered courteous and legal to return mail that has blown onto your property back to your neighbor's mailbox. This is often seen as a neighborly gesture to help ensure that the mail reaches its intended recipient.
