Chicago, IL asked in Landlord - Tenant for Illinois

Q: When it can become a legal issue when a neighbor gives her negative opinions about me to other neighbors

A lady neighbor at my complex complains about me to other neighbors. How I know is I dated her friend that told me " I'm weird". I've done nothing but chat with her. A therapist I told about the lady. He thinks she is unfriendly. There is a couple of ladies that are friendly to me till they are around her or each other. I'm not even flirting. Thank goodness two of them live on the third floor. There is lots of drama on the third floor. I did tell the care coordinator at my complex about my concern about the lady. I avoid the lady often. She is very negative. Maybe it's because she is mental or has a medical problem.

A: Usually it becomes legally actionable when it crosses the line from opinion to a false disparaging factual statement that causes actual harm to your reputation.
