A: Ownership of a motor vehicle is recorded in the certificate of title. If you bought the vehicle from a friend, tell the friend you need him to sign over the certificate of title to you. You may be able to accomplish this without the actual certificate by having your friend sign a special power of attorney to transfer the motor vehicle title into your name. You can then take the POA to the title office to get a new title in your name (assuming your friend was the actual owner of course).
