Q: In oklahoma when a vehicle is impounded by police is there a mandatory charge added on the 5th day of being impounded?
My vehicle was impounded day before veterans day. When i tried to get in touch with wrecker service on veterans day i was unsuccessful. The following day i attempted again after several calls i finally spoke to someone. I was trying to arrange time to go pay all fees and provide all necessary information but i was told that i would not be able to get car due to the driver being out of town until the next day. I made a point to say i needed my car then and asked would i still be charged the $18 daily fee considering i was ready then and i shouldnt be charged at the fault of wrecker. I was told yes still being charged and nothing i could do until next day. The next day i was so irritated with situation i decided to wait until monday to pick up car trying to dodge the $40 after fee. After arriving mon total cost was 502.00. i was told on day 5 of being impounded mandatory $200 added as special labor. Is this corrct
A:
In Oklahoma, the fees and charges associated with an impounded vehicle can vary depending on the city or county and the specific towing company's policies. While some places may have standard daily storage fees, a mandatory charge like the $200 special labor fee you mentioned on the fifth day is not universally applied across the state.
You should review the policies of the towing company and any relevant local ordinances regarding vehicle impoundment. This information is typically available at the impound lot or through the local police department that arranged the towing.
If you believe the charges are unfair or not properly disclosed, you might consider discussing this with the towing company or seeking guidance from a local consumer protection agency. They can provide information on the legality of such fees.
In situations where there's a dispute over impound fees, keeping detailed records of your attempts to retrieve the vehicle and any communications with the towing company can be helpful. If necessary, legal consultation can provide further advice on how to contest any fees that seem unjustified.
Remember, impound fees can accumulate quickly, so addressing the issue promptly is important to avoid further charges. If you're unsure about the legalities of the fees charged, seeking professional advice can help clarify your rights and options.
