Chicago, IL asked in Animal / Dog Law for Kentucky

Q: Can the adoption place take my dog?

My friend is very ill and asked me to take her dog. I have a farm and love dogs so she knew he would be well taken care of. I got his microchip registered and took him to the vet. The place she adopted it from is now contacting me saying it's their dog and she signed a contract, like we all do when we adopt an animal, that she can't rehome the dog and it has to go back to them? I have never had a shelter want a dog back and I love my dog. What do I do?

A: What you describe is a standard term in animal adoption contracts. Why don’t you contact the shelter and see if you can work something out with them? They might be willing to accept your application and let you keep the dog.
