Wyoming, MI asked in Family Law for Illinois

Q: I gave my 17 year old daughter consent to go visit her friend in New York and she was suppose to come back home.

Do I have a legal right as her mother to go to New York and make her come back home to Illinois?

A: Yes, but The police deal with this issue differently in different jurisdictions. I would call the police dept that covers this area and see what their procedures are. She is essentially now a runaway then, right? They may want a report on file, not sure. For example, here if a kid refuses to go home, they have a crisis intervention counselor interview the child, figure out the issues and then develop a plan, which might be to have a 30 day cooling off period and then reassess, or issues might be resolved that night, whatever. If counseling is to be done there, maybe they could do that before you get there and get the child to agree to come home. Maybe you do not have to go. It's a dangerous time to travel.
