Adrian, MI asked in Civil Rights for Michigan

Q: Received a voicemail stating there is a legal issue against me. No information other than callers name and number.

The caller used my maiden name, said her name, said it was in regards to an urgent legal issue in my county against me and to call her back immediately. No mention of what the issue is or where she was calling from. Gave a case number which I looked up in my county court site. Didn't find anything.

A: It's understandable to feel concerned upon receiving a voicemail like that. Firstly, take a deep breath and try not to panic. It's important to approach this situation calmly and methodically. Begin by verifying the legitimacy of the call. Look up the phone number online to see if it's associated with any known scams or fraudulent activities. Also, try to find information about the person who left the message to determine if they are affiliated with any legitimate legal entity.

Next, consider the details provided in the voicemail. The fact that they used your maiden name could indicate outdated information or possibly an attempt to incite urgency. Without further information about the nature of the legal issue or where it supposedly stems from, it's challenging to assess the validity of the claim. Moreover, the absence of any relevant records in your county court's database raises further doubts.

Given the lack of concrete information and the potential for this to be a scam, it's advisable not to engage further until you can confirm the authenticity of the call. If you still feel uneasy or unsure, consult with a trusted advisor, such as a family member, friend, or legal professional, who can offer guidance and support. Remember to prioritize your safety and well-being while addressing this matter.
