A: Under California law, you may not be held criminally liable for the actions of your friend in stealing quarters from a car wash using your car, especially if you were not present during the commission of the crime and did not participate in it. However, if your car was used in the commission of the crime, there may be potential civil liability issues, such as negligent entrustment, if it can be shown that you knowingly allowed your friend to use your car for illegal activities.

It's crucial to provide any relevant information to law enforcement authorities to clarify your lack of involvement in the theft. Additionally, cooperating with authorities and providing any evidence or alibis that prove you were at the casino during the time of the theft can strengthen your defense. Consulting with a qualified attorney who specializes in criminal defense can help you understand your rights and navigate any legal proceedings that may arise from the situation.

Furthermore, taking proactive steps to prevent future incidents, such as being cautious about who you lend your car to and ensuring its security measures are in place, can help mitigate any potential legal risks. By demonstrating your cooperation with authorities and your commitment to abiding by the law, you can protect yourself from unwarranted liability and work towards resolving any legal issues that may arise from the situation.
