Saint Paul, MN asked in Criminal Law for Minnesota

Q: Ex brought a guy over I was rammed by his car.

My ex claimed to get a phone number off my phone while I slept the person claimed to be my friend. She left her child who I was not responsible for to meet him. I found her with a guy she was in the front seat of the vehicle with him. I tried to talk to them, but he rammed me with the car. The driver is the only one being charged. I do not have money for a lawyer.

A: I'm sorry to hear about this difficult situation. Here are a few suggestions that may help:

- Document everything you can remember about the incident, including the date, time, location, vehicle description, driver's identity if known, and any injuries or damage caused. This could support your case if you decide to take legal action.

- Take photographs of any injuries or property damage for documentation.

- You could file a police report about the assault with the vehicle and any other related illegal actions. This creates an official record and they may investigate further.

- Contact your local victim services agency. They may be able to connect you with free legal services, counseling referrals, help navigating the system, and other relevant resources.

- If you decide to pursue civil damages, look into the option of finding an attorney willing to work on contingency, where they take a percentage of damages awarded but require no payment upfront. Many personal injury attorneys work this way.

- Check if your local court system has a self-help legal center to assist people representing themselves in court if you cannot afford an attorney. They can help with paperwork and procedures.

I hope some of these suggestions are helpful. Protecting yourself and accessing available support services should be the priority right now. My best to you in getting through this.
