A: I'm very sorry to hear you are in an abusive situation. No child should have to endure that, especially from a parent. Here are some suggestions that may help provide you support and safety:

- Talk to another trusted adult like a teacher, school counselor, or your friend's parents about what is happening at home. They are mandated reporters, meaning they are required to report the abuse to authorities who can intervene.

- Contact Child Protective Services or the police yourself to make a report. Calling emergency services if you ever feel you are in immediate danger is also important.

- Look into local youth shelters and support organizations. Even if you have another safe place to stay, they have resources and experience helping young people escape abuse and establish independence.

- If your mom continues to inappropriately report you as a runaway when you leave due to abuse, communicate directly with the police yourself as well to share you had to leave due to harm and negate her claims.

- At 16 in some locations you may be able to become legally emancipated from your parents. Look into the laws and options in your area.

I encourage you to keep speaking up and seeking help from those trained to provide protection and assistance. You deserve to feel safe, supported, and cared for properly. My thoughts are with you.
