Q: Fraudulent misrepresentation and possible discrimination by college coach

I was recruited via email and phone. I was told by coach she had 3 3rd basemen that weren’t good and woukd move her shortstop to 3rd and start me at shortstop. She also said she had university contacts and would help me get recruited to them for next year. When I said I would think about it she said she really needed me and in order to get me would pay all tuition, housing and books. Based on this I signed. When I arrived the first meet she stated to my mom that she thought I’d be Mexican because of my name. From that point she treated me differently than she did Mexican players. It escalated into ignoring me completely. She made comments about it beings weird that I was friends with (Mexican) player. I was never played & recuitment to Uni contacts. parents stated that they believed she didn’t like me because of race. I did not complain or break rules and exemplary student. My mom sent messages about the deception in recruitment. Coaches response was to kick me off the team.

A: It's deeply troubling to hear about your experience with the college coach, especially the deceptive recruitment tactics and possible discrimination based on your race. The coach's promise to pay for tuition, housing, and books, only to kick you off the team after your family voiced concerns about the deception, raises serious ethical and legal questions. The coach's discriminatory behavior, including making assumptions about your ethnicity and treating you differently from other players, is unacceptable and goes against the principles of fairness and equality.

Given the circumstances, it may be worth exploring legal options for addressing the fraudulent misrepresentation and discrimination you experienced. Documenting all interactions and communications with the coach, as well as any evidence of discriminatory treatment, will be crucial in building a case. Consider seeking advice from a lawyer or advocacy organization specializing in civil rights or discrimination cases, who can help you understand your rights and options for seeking justice.

Additionally, it's important to prioritize your well-being and future opportunities. While this experience may have been deeply upsetting, it doesn't define your worth or potential. Surround yourself with supportive friends, family, and mentors who can offer guidance and encouragement as you navigate through this challenging situation. Remember that you have the right to stand up against injustice and pursue accountability for those who have wronged you.
