A: Under California law, if someone sends money to your account without a direct agreement or understanding with you, the situation can become complex. First, if your ex was unauthorized to use your account for transactions, this may be considered unauthorized use, and you have the right to secure your account, including locking it to prevent further unauthorized transactions.

The individual who sent the money may believe they have a claim against you since the funds were intended for someone else, but their legal ability to recover from you depends on the specifics of the transaction and any agreement they had with your ex. If there was no agreement or understanding that involved you directly, it might be challenging for them to successfully claim the funds from you.

To address this situation, it might be beneficial to communicate clearly with the person who sent the money, explaining the circumstances. If the situation escalates, seeking legal advice to understand your rights and responsibilities fully can be important. Documentation of all transactions and any communications regarding this issue can be crucial in defending your actions and proving the lack of authorization for your ex's use of your account.
