A: The requirements set by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for grant eligibility, including the stipulation that works must be published by certain publishers within a specific timeframe, are designed to ensure a standard of professional achievement. However, these requirements can be challenging, particularly for writers who have faced significant barriers, including those related to disability. If your request for an extension or modification due to disability was denied, this might feel discouraging, especially if the time difference was not adequately considered.

It is important to understand that while organizations have policies, they must also adhere to laws ensuring equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities. If you believe that the denial of your request for accommodation or the failure to consider time zone differences constitutes discrimination, you might want to consult with a legal advisor or a disability rights organization. They can provide guidance on whether such practices could be challenged under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or other relevant legislation.

In terms of immediate steps, it would be advisable to document all correspondence with the NEA, detailing your requests and their responses. Communicate your concerns clearly, explaining how your disability impacts your ability to meet their requirements and why additional accommodations or adjustments are necessary. Persistence and clear communication can sometimes lead to reconsideration of previously denied requests. Meanwhile, looking into other grants or funding opportunities that might have more flexible requirements could also be beneficial.
