A: Under California law, the use of cameras in rental properties where guests expect privacy, such as bedrooms or bathrooms, is strictly prohibited without clear and conspicuous notice. If the cameras you discovered were placed in areas where you had a reasonable expectation of privacy, you may have grounds for a complaint or legal action.

You took the right steps by contacting VRBO and the host directly to address your concerns. The host's admission and subsequent removal of the camera suggest that they acknowledged the issue, but VRBO's lack of response is concerning. It's important to document all communications with the host and VRBO for any future actions you may decide to take.

Consider consulting with an attorney to understand the full scope of your rights and potential remedies available to you under California privacy laws. They can offer guidance on how to proceed, potentially including filing a complaint with relevant authorities or pursuing legal action for any invasion of privacy you experienced.
