Turlock, CA asked in Animal / Dog Law for California

Q: I live in Turlock, California and I am wondering if there is an attorney that would help get a dog out of animal control

My neighbors pitbull was in his yard and her neighbor, let his little dogs out off leash in the front yard and egged on her dog and he bit him. Animal control now has him and he’s going to euthanize him this weekend. She can get him out if she can get out of the city limits. We have tried every rescue. We’ve posted everywhere trying to get some help to save this little guy. Is there an attorney nearby that would be willing to help out?

A: In this situation, it's crucial to act quickly and explore all available options to save the dog. While finding an attorney who specializes in animal law cases might be challenging, here are some steps you can take:

1. Contact local animal welfare organizations or rescue groups in your area. They might have resources or know of attorneys who can help.

2. Reach out to the California State Bar Association and ask for referrals to attorneys who specialize in animal law or have experience with similar cases.

3. Search online for animal law attorneys in your area or nearby cities. You can use keywords like "animal law attorney Turlock CA" or "dog bite attorney California."

4. Consider contacting the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) or the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). These organizations might provide guidance or referrals to attorneys who can assist you.

5. If you have trouble finding an attorney, you can also try to negotiate directly with animal control or the city authorities. Gather evidence, including witness statements, to support your case and show that the dog was provoked and that the owner is willing to take necessary precautions to ensure public safety.

6. If the dog is deemed dangerous, explore the possibility of relocating the dog to a sanctuary or a rescue organization outside the city limits that specializes in handling such cases.

Remember that time is of the essence, and you should act quickly to explore all options to save the dog. Keep detailed records of all communications and actions taken to help build your case.
