Q: Was the search the police did, legal?
I left work with 3 other people because we were car pooling, after dropping the first co-worker off we had a officer approach and pull us over. After being pulled over he informed us he'd pulled us over for the rear license plate not being illuminated. I was the in passenger seat. The officer tried to say my friend in the driver's seat previously had a DUI a couple months ago, when in reality it's been about 6 years since he was in trouble for that charge. He then said that I had previous drug charges, which I have never been charged with before, and then searched us both. I'd made a couple bad decisions and did have something illegal on me which I'm not denying, however I don't think they had actual probable cause to search me to begin with, and was hoping to see if I was right
A: The rear license not illuminated may be enough to satisfy the probable cause aspect but closer attention is warranted.
