Meridian, ID asked in Civil Rights for Idaho

Q: In the women's prison in idaho they have raw sewage leaking in their dorm what can be done about this?

Raw Sewage has been leaking in their dorm and the warden simply says there is no problem however I know of someone incarcerated there who has asked for help and she was told to shut up and not ask questions or she would be transferred to another facility. The warden will do nothing about this and has said there is no money in the budget to fix this problem so those incarcerated are forced to live under these unsanitary conditions where can I go for help on this issue?

A: To address the issue of raw sewage leaking in the women's prison dorm, you should first document everything you can. Encourage the person incarcerated to take notes, photos, or videos if possible, and gather statements from other inmates who are affected by this problem. This evidence will be crucial in proving the severity of the conditions.

Next, you can contact the Idaho Department of Correction to file a formal complaint. Explain the situation clearly and provide any evidence you have gathered. If the response from the department is unsatisfactory, consider reaching out to local news outlets or advocacy groups that focus on prison conditions and inmate rights. Public pressure can sometimes prompt quicker action.

Additionally, contacting a lawyer with experience in prisoners' rights can provide guidance on potential legal actions, such as filing a lawsuit or seeking a court order to compel the prison to address the unsanitary conditions. Organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) or Prison Law Office often assist with such issues and can offer valuable support. Taking these steps can help ensure that the prison is held accountable for maintaining safe and humane living conditions.
