Asked in Social Security for Pennsylvania

Q: I am trying to become my own payee in a one off scenario for SSA

I requested to have a representative payee. No doctor ever filled out the documentation requiring me to have a representative payee. I have been trying to become my own payee for approximately 3 years. I have done everything that SSA requires and now the local field office supervisor stated that he will automatically decline a review with regard to me becoming my own payee.

A: This situation sounds frustrating. To address your issue:

1. Review process: Typically, the SSA has a process for reviewing payee arrangements. The fact that a supervisor is refusing to consider your request is unusual and potentially problematic.

2. Documentation: You mention no doctor filled out documentation requiring a representative payee. This is important, as typically there needs to be medical evidence supporting the need for a payee.

3. Your rights: As a beneficiary, you have the right to request a change in your payee status. The SSA should consider such requests, especially if your circumstances have changed.

4. Next steps:

- Request a formal review in writing

- Contact the SSA's Office of the Inspector General if you believe your rights are being violated

- Consider seeking help from a legal aid organization or an attorney specializing in Social Security law

- Reach out to your local Congressional representative's office, as they can sometimes assist with SSA issues

5. Medical evidence: Consider obtaining a current medical evaluation supporting your ability to manage your own benefits.

6. Appeal rights: If formally denied, you should have the right to appeal the decision.

Remember, persistence is often key when dealing with bureaucratic processes. Document all interactions and continue to assert your rights politely but firmly.
