Ossining, NY asked in Traffic Tickets for New York

Q: Is there a way I can get my tickets reduced?

What should I do if I got 2 tickets, one being “speed not reasonable and prudent” but the speed was not listed on the ticket, and the other “moved from lane unsafely”. I double yellowed a car going a little below the speed limit and just as I did, a cop was a little ahead and saw me do that. He was oncoming but decently far away. I was speeding not by much, how did he know I was speeding at all if he didn’t use radar or any other way to see my speed other than just his opinion. I am not proud of my actions, and definitely learnt my lesson, but is there any way I can get my tickets reduced? Do I plead not guilty, though if he brings up his dash cam, it would show myself guilty? Or can I plead guilty and still have the charges reduced?

A: If there is a way to plead not guilty online then I would do that and click on “request a hearing”. Many jurisdictions will simply give you an offer at that point and you can resolve the ticket for less. If not, go to the hearing and explain yourself (often times they have a court clerk to speak to people before court starts or you can do it when your case is called) and they will likely resolve both tickets for the cost of one or something like that.

But definitely go online and plead not guilty and see what comes up. You will either get the opportunity to resolve the case right then and there for less, or be able to do so at a hearing. It almost never hurts you, unless what you did was egregious and/or you are a repeat offender.

Good luck!
