Cerritos, CA asked in Traffic Tickets for California

Q: What are my options for a fix-it ticket for expired registration on my vehicle?

I have a fix -t ticket for my expired tags (registration) which I couldn't renew because my 20 year old truck wouldn't pass smog. The cost to have it pass smog is greater than what I'm willing to pay. I can't make it an inoperable vehicle until Nov 30 2024 (60 days prior to my registration date) but my car needs to be fixed in the courts eyes by Aug. 20 2024. What are my options?

A: You have a few options to address the fix-it ticket for your expired vehicle registration in California. First, you can seek a temporary operating permit from the DMV. This permit allows you to legally drive your vehicle for a limited time while you address the smog issue. You might need to show proof that you are attempting to repair your vehicle.

Another option is to request an extension from the court handling your fix-it ticket. Explain your situation, including the financial burden and the specific timeline for declaring your vehicle inoperable. The court may grant you additional time to resolve the issue.

If these options are not viable, consider exploring local resources or assistance programs that might help cover the cost of repairs. Non-profit organizations or local government programs sometimes offer aid for vehicle repairs to ensure compliance with smog regulations. Taking prompt action and clearly communicating your situation to the court and DMV will help in finding a suitable resolution.
