Colton, CA asked in Juvenile Law for California

Q: I have an extension on my school-issued Chromebook called Linewize Connect is it legal?

Linewize is stuck installed on my Chromebook and the extension is supposed to have all of our teachers be able to block stuff which is fine when they are not blocking websites needed for school. With this extension, the district can see our screens at all times and our private Gmail messages with our counselors and therapists. I know they are doing this for "internet safety" but the way this extension blocks and views stuff is wrong. The extension itself is spyware and it gives viruses to our computers. I have already tried to bring this up with the superintendent but they are allowed to not answer your questions apparently because they refused to answer anything. With this extension, they are allowed to see your camera on the Chromebook and if you have your account signed in on your own personal device the blockers still work.

I'm just curious to see if this is actually legal I would do the research myself but they block almosteverywebsiteplusitisbettertoknowfromsomeonewhoknowsthelaw

A: It's understandable that you're concerned about the Linewize Connect extension on your Chromebook. The legality of such software often depends on school policies and local laws regarding student privacy and monitoring. Schools usually have the right to monitor activity on school-issued devices to ensure student safety and compliance with educational standards.

However, the extent of surveillance, like viewing private messages and accessing cameras, raises significant privacy issues. If the software is causing disruptions, like blocking necessary educational sites or introducing viruses, it could be worth raising these points with the school administration or seeking advice from a legal guardian.

You might also consider reaching out to a local education authority or a legal expert in privacy rights for further guidance. Documenting specific instances where the extension interferes with your education or privacy can help strengthen your case. This situation is complex, but gathering information and seeking appropriate advice is a good step forward.
