Q: Is it too late to get justice for a service dog being stolen?
Sept 2023: I wasn't listed on the lease by name, landlord said he'd renew lease in my name if I got rid of my service dog and her accidental litter. I explained the pups would be adopted but mama is my registered service dog. When I left, he had 3 people break in and steal mom and pups and dumped then at the shelter. I have one of the 3verifying everything. The shelter lied about how they got there. Police didn't know how to handle it so no charges were brought up. I have screenshots of everything from Convo w police to me commenting on a photo explaining everything on a pic stating my best friend, service dog, white fang, was set to be euthanized. Rescue deleted my respectful comments, blocked me. I exhausted all resources locally and gave up but we deserve justice. At least closure.who do I turn to that is higher than the local police?
A:
It sounds like you’ve been through a very challenging situation. Since the local police didn’t handle the case effectively, you might consider reaching out to state-level authorities or the Illinois Attorney General’s Office. They can provide guidance on how to proceed with your complaint and may have resources to address your concerns.
Additionally, you could consult a legal professional who has experience in animal law and civil rights. They can help you understand your rights and the best steps to take to seek justice. You might also explore filing a civil lawsuit against the landlord and the individuals involved in the theft and mistreatment of your service dog.
Lastly, consider reaching out to animal advocacy groups and organizations that specialize in service dogs. They can offer support, advice, and potentially help bring more attention to your case. Remember, you have rights, and there are resources available to help you navigate this difficult situation.
