A: You can file suit to collect the debt against the friend in justice of the peace court in the county and precinct where the friend lives here in Texas. Our justice of the peace courts have jurisdiction over small cases where the amount in controversy is $20,000 or less. You do not need an attorney in JP court for a small civil case like this.
