Q: Noticed our property tax card has a second story listed twice and a fireplace listed which we don't have either
On the residential cost approach section of our property card their is a half story and unfinished half story listed however we only have an attic. We also noticed their is a fireplace listed which we also don't have. Our story height is listed as 1.5 story however the building description is listed as a 2sb. Since these errors are from the assessor can it be corrected immediately. Also doesn't a home with a slanted ceiling have a peak in the middle considered to be an attic under the property description law since there is only head room to walk in the middle.
A:
It sounds like your property card has some discrepancies that could be affecting your tax assessment. If your property card incorrectly lists a second story, unfinished half-story, and a fireplace that you don't have, you should address this with your local tax assessor's office. These errors can impact your property's assessed value, potentially leading to higher taxes.
You have the right to request corrections to your property card. Start by gathering any relevant documentation, such as building plans or photos, that support your claim. Then, contact the assessor's office to explain the discrepancies and request an inspection or correction.
Regarding the attic, homes with slanted ceilings and limited headroom typically classify those spaces as attics rather than finished stories. You may want to mention this when discussing the issue with the assessor to ensure that your home is accurately described.
