Q: Can a bank charge you a foriegn transaction fee and when it was a domestic transaction and their was no money conversion
The merchant was a foriegn merchant but the bank didn't even pay that merchant directly just the merchants name was listed on the recipte paypal payed the merchant.
A:
Yes, banks can sometimes charge a foreign transaction fee even when no currency conversion takes place. This often happens when the merchant is based outside of your country, regardless of how the payment is processed. Even if you paid through a platform like PayPal and no direct conversion occurred, the bank might still consider it a foreign transaction due to the merchant's location.
Check the terms and conditions of your bank's foreign transaction fees. Some banks charge these fees whenever a payment involves a foreign entity, even if the transaction is processed domestically. Understanding these terms can help you know when and why such fees might apply.
If you feel the charge is unfair or unclear, contact your bank’s customer service. Explain the situation, and ask them to clarify their fee policy in this context. In some cases, they might reverse the fee or provide further details on how they handle similar transactions.
