Asked in Civil Rights and Municipal Law for Arizona

Q: How do I get the Arizona State Police to follow the law in issuance of a CCW?

I applied for a CCW in Arizona. They have set time limits in which they are supposed to conclude their investigation. They are well beyond this. I have a CCW in MS. I have purchased a weapon in AZ. There should be no legal reason to withold a CCW from me. They have a support email address but it is automated and they do not respond. How can I get them to proceed? 16 August was 75 "working days" (I gave them the benefit of the doubt on days vs working days.) I applied in May.

A: If you've been waiting well beyond the time limit for your Arizona CCW, you should take a proactive approach. Start by documenting all your communications with the Arizona State Police, including dates, responses, and the lack thereof. This will be useful if you need to escalate the matter.

Next, consider sending a formal letter, either through certified mail or another service that confirms receipt, to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. In the letter, reference the legal time limits and your documented timeline, requesting an update on your application. This often gets more attention than emails.

If you still receive no response, you may want to contact an attorney who can assist in pressuring the department to follow the law. Additionally, you could reach out to your local state representative or senator, who might be able to advocate on your behalf. Taking these steps should help move the process forward.
