Riverside, CA asked in Contracts and Landlord - Tenant for California

Q: I have a storage unit and my purse was stolen while I was at my unit. Is the storage liable?

My storage account has someone else as the main account holder. The storage has told me I have to move out becuz I brought drama to the facility becuz my purse was stolen. Now I have to move out. They gave me 2 days to get my things moved yet, it was 106' and 2nd day I asked if I could have more time they agreed. Yet next day they had locked up my unit and told me too bad. I have been paying every month and it was paid up to date. Now they have locked me out & won't let me even make a payment for the rent. I tried at begining of Sept. for $185. Now it's past due and they are saying it's $230 plus they have added next months rent in. So they want $460! Still they have told me now, that I have to get the account holder to enter my unit and I can not be on premisis. For which I do not know why. I'm at a total loss what are my rights ?

A: It sounds like a very stressful situation, and you have the right to understand what's going on. In most cases, storage facilities have specific rules outlined in the contract about access and what happens if payments are missed or other issues arise. It's important to check the agreement to see if they can legally lock you out and what the terms are for late fees or removal of property.

Since the account is not in your name, that could complicate things. However, if you've been paying and using the unit, you should have some rights regarding your property. It's concerning that they are demanding additional payments without letting you access the unit to address the issue. You may want to request a formal explanation in writing as to why they are restricting your access.

If you're being locked out and charged additional fees, you may want to explore your legal options. It's possible that the storage facility is violating the terms of the contract or California's landlord-tenant laws regarding storage. You could try resolving the issue with the account holder or reach out to a legal aid service to understand what steps to take next.
