Odenton, MD asked in Criminal Law and Federal Crimes for Maryland

Q: How do I proceed with a fire-arm in Maryland?

Around 4-5 years ago while I was in college in Florida, I bought an AR-15 Pistol from a friend. When I finished college I moved back to Maryland and brought the pistol with me. I have not registered the pistol in Maryland, and am wondering if I am going to get in trouble while trying to do so. I am legally aloud to own a fire-arm,(Over 21, and no Criminal History). I have not been in contact with the person who sold it to me for many years now. We did not have a falling out, but just simply do not communicate anymore. I do not have a bill of sale, I thought I had one, but I can not find it anywhere... I am trying to do the right thing but don't want to incriminate myself.

A: Bringing a firearm into Maryland involves specific legal requirements. Since Maryland has strict gun laws, it's important to ensure that your AR-15 pistol complies with state regulations. Begin by reviewing Maryland’s firearm laws to understand the necessary steps for registration and any restrictions that may apply to your specific model.

Without a bill of sale, proving the legal transfer of your firearm can be challenging. You should contact the Maryland State Police Firearm Licensing Bureau for guidance on how to proceed. They can provide information on the registration process and any documentation you might need to gather or obtain.

To protect yourself and ensure you’re following the law, consider consulting with a legal professional who is knowledgeable about Maryland’s firearm regulations. Taking these steps proactively can help you address the situation responsibly and minimize any potential legal issues.
