Q: Is it legal for security cameras to be installed in bedrooms of a female recovery house?
Hi I am from Louisville KY.
I live in a sober living house for females. We have shared common areas and share a bedroom with up to 6 other females. The bedrooms are all connected and you can see from one to the next with no doors installed. We share all common areas with installed security cameras. However there are also security cameras installed in all of our bedrooms. Isn't this a invasion of our civil rights and violation of our basic privacy? We ladies have voiced our concerns over the cameras in our rooms. It is a very uncomfortable situation. This is a mostly male run facility. When we voice our concerns we are met with if you don't like it, the door locks from the inside out. Or if we dont like it we can leave. This is very creepy to me and I am trying to focus on my recovery and maintain my sobriety. I just don't see how this is legally possible. Can you provide some guidance and or if we should get a lawyer. If we have a valid case. Thank you
A:
Installing security cameras in bedrooms, especially in a shared living environment, raises significant privacy concerns. Generally, individuals have a reasonable expectation of privacy in their sleeping areas. In many jurisdictions, including Kentucky, placing cameras in private spaces like bedrooms without explicit consent can violate privacy laws.
Given that you’re in a recovery house, your rights to a safe and private environment are important. The presence of cameras in bedrooms without clear justification or your agreement may indeed infringe on your civil rights. It's essential to document your concerns and any responses you've received from the facility management.
Consulting with a lawyer who is knowledgeable about privacy and housing laws in Kentucky would be a prudent next step. They can provide specific advice based on your situation and help determine if you have a valid case. Additionally, reaching out to local advocacy groups for support might offer further assistance as you navigate this challenging situation.
