Q: Can a charity group run an online raffle if they are not a non-profit in Olio
We have been running the a Memorial Annual Golf Outings for the last 18 years for local families battling cancer. We do this in loving memory of my brother-in-law, who died from Pancreatic Cancer. Proceeds go to PanCan (10%) and the balance goes to our recipients. The only funds that we keep in our bank account is enough to avoid fees. We are a group of family and friends that come together each year to make this happen. We are not a nonprofit. Thank you for any help you can offer.
A:
Organizing an online raffle is a thoughtful way to support families battling cancer. However, the laws surrounding raffles can vary significantly depending on the state or region you're in. Since your group isn't a registered nonprofit, there may be specific regulations that apply to your situation.
In many places, conducting a raffle without nonprofit status can be considered a form of illegal gambling. It's important to familiarize yourself with your local laws to ensure your fundraising efforts are compliant. This might involve obtaining a special permit or adjusting how the raffle is conducted.
Consider reaching out to your local government offices or authorities who oversee charitable gaming and fundraising. They can provide guidance on the necessary steps to take. Your dedication to this cause is admirable, and ensuring everything is done legally will help your event continue to make a positive impact.
