Las Vegas, NV asked in Social Security for Nevada

Q: Can I spend my childrens survivors benefits for a down payment on a home?

I received a lump sum back payment and would like to purchase a home. I was also wondering if after all needs are met can we use the money for recreation and a family trip?

A: You may use your children's survivor benefits to support their living needs, which can include putting a down payment on a home where they will reside. Purchasing a home can be considered an appropriate use of the funds if it directly benefits the children and provides them with stability.

After all essential needs are met, using some of the benefits for recreation or a family trip may be acceptable. If these activities contribute to the children's well-being and family bonding, they can be seen as beneficial uses of the funds.

It's important to ensure that all expenditures are in the best interest of the children. Keeping detailed records of how the benefits are spent can help demonstrate that the funds are used appropriately, should any questions arise in the future.
