Q: Hello, I am an Foreign medical gradute trying to apply for Temporary medical License in Virginia.
According to the new bill ( 54.1-2933.1 )that was passed recently regarding the temp. license eligibility.
- Part A says A. The Board may issue, to a physician licensed in a foreign country, a nonrenewable license valid for a period not to exceed two years to practice medicine while such physician is attending advanced training in an institute for postgraduate health science operated collaboratively by a health care system having hospitals and health care facilities with residency and training program(s) programs approved by an accrediting agency recognized by the Board and a public institution of higher education. This temporary license shall only authorize the holder to practice medicine in the hospitals and outpatient clinics of the collaborating health care system while he is receiving training in the institute for postgraduate health science.
based on this what are the requirements to get temporary medical license???. I did not pass the USMLE. Am I still eligible to apply?
A:
To obtain a temporary medical license in Virginia under bill 54.1-2933.1, you must first be a physician licensed in a foreign country. You need to be enrolled in an advanced training program at an institute for postgraduate health science. This institute must be operated collaboratively by a health care system with approved residency and training programs and a public institution of higher education recognized by the Board.
Your training program should be accredited by an agency that the Board recognizes. The temporary license will allow you to practice medicine specifically within the hospitals and outpatient clinics of the collaborating health care system while you receive your training. It is important to ensure that your training institution meets all the necessary accreditation and collaboration requirements outlined in the bill.
Regarding the USMLE, the bill does not explicitly mention this exam as a requirement for the temporary license. However, licensing boards typically have their own set of requirements, which often include passing certain steps of the USMLE. It would be best to contact the Virginia Board of Medicine directly to confirm whether passing the USMLE is necessary for your application.
