Q: Can my Chicago landlord raise my rent with the notice they've given me?
I've lived in my unit since 12/01/2020. My landlord gave me notice on 09/13/2024 that they would be increasing my rent from $1050 to $1231. I've let them know that per Chicago law they are required to give notice of 120 days prior to rent increase and they responded with the following:
"We can give you an extension for one more month for the same amount to hit 120 days at the rate of $1,050. That means December 31 would be the extension. After that, we can offer you a different rate instead of the $1,231. We can offer you $1,125 for the next 12 months after December.:"
Are they able to retroactively change their answer like that or would the 120 day notice need to be from the date of the new offer?
