A: This situation sounds very concerning, and you should take immediate action to address these charges.

You have the right to appeal any SSA overpayment decision within 60 days of receiving the notice. First, request detailed documentation from your local Social Security office explaining how they calculated this amount - it seems unusually high for just 5 months of SSI benefits while awaiting SSDI approval. The SSA must provide clear documentation showing how they determined both the $24,000 charge and the additional overpayments.

If you believe the charges are incorrect, you can file for reconsideration and possibly request waiver of the overpayment if you cannot afford to repay it. Consider seeking help from Legal Aid or similar organizations that provide free legal assistance for Social Security issues. Many people successfully appeal overpayment charges, so don't feel discouraged - just make sure to act quickly to protect your rights and gather all supporting documentation to show why you believe the amount is incorrect.
