Q: Can I ask for a rent reduction? Is there a formula to figure out how much the reduction should be?
I reported kitchen tile sagging. Upon investigation, contractor found water under tiles and a puddle under the refrigerator, mold and water damage under the house, kitchen area only. He believes the leakage has be ongoing. However, it could not be determine if it was the result of the refrigerator's bad seals. The Landlord made no warranty as to the repair or replacement of the refrigerator. I had the freezer repaired, but did not repair bad seals. Refrigerator has now been disposed of. Without direct proof of any negligence. However, the Landlord feels it is my fault, she decided to pay for the repairs. The contractor said the kitchen will be sealed during the repairs, the house is habitable. The Landlord's insurance policy will not cover temporary housing or loss of the use of the kitchen. I do not have renter's insurance, so I am requesting a rent reduction because the kitchen is not usable. I have respiratory issues, who will be at fault if I get sick during the repair process?
