Q: Excessive Late Fee for Rent
I recently received a notice about an overdue payment for my apartment at Illinois Tower, managed by BeHome. The notice states that I incurred a $200 late fee for being six days late on my payment. I believe this fee may exceed what is legally allowable under the Illinois Residential Tenants’ Right to Late Fee Act, which caps late fees at $20 for the first late payment and a maximum of $100 per rental period. I am seeking legal guidance on whether this charge is enforceable and what steps I can take to address it. I reside in Champaign, Illinois
