Kent, WA asked in Uncategorized for Washington

Q: Hello - I work for a non-profit senior center. We use volunteers a lot for our lunches, programs, and activities.

We also provide rides to medical appointments for seniors in our community. Sometimes the riders going to the medical appointments want to tip the volunteer drivers. Is this allowed? Could the volunteer drivers accept the tips if they are given to the organization and not kept personally?

A: A Washington attorney could advise best, but your question remains open for a week. If you want a meaningful legal answer in terms of the significance of this as income or other attributes, you could repost under "Employment Law." From a PRACTICALITY standpoint, such things are done all the time in society as a small gesture of kindness or generosity, where most places don't really care or turn a blind eye to it. But again, an employment attorney could advise of all the full ramifications of the practice. Good luck
