Q: Probability of getting my deposit back and one and half months of rent back for renting a room without an egress window?
I moved across the state and rented a room in the basement of a house. I did not actually see the room before moving in. Anyways, the room did not have a window. Which in my state does not follow the building code (I think it is IRC 310). As there needs to be an emergency escape. The property management company and the owner's say they have been renting it out for years. I reported it to the fire department and they also said it was illegal. But the property management company is blaming me and saying I was the one who terminated my contract. Which is crap because it was illegally rented out. In total its about $1,500 between the deposit and rent. Just want to double check that it is illegal to rent out a room in a basement without a window. And the probability of getting at least my deposit back. Thanks!!
