Lansing, MI asked in Divorce, Family Law and Child Custody for Michigan

Q: Can my son's father make me drive hundreds of miles or even out of state for his sport event?

So my order states that I have take my son to his sport event this was made when my son had jujutsu and was a 20 mins drive so my son's father now put him in wrestling a new sport which I was fine with his father went to send me the schedule and I stated to him that I had no problem getting him to his wrestling matches but the ones that are required for me to stay out of state or drive hundreds of miles and stay overnight somewhere I was not able to do This is very unreasonable do I have any chance here can I be forced to leave state or drive hundreds of miles to get my son to these things I don't mind taking him to the ones that are reasonable and not super far but I think it's insane for me to have to pay to stay in a hotel overnight somewhere for a whole weekend or drive out of state I've even offered for him to take him himself but I would like to trade weekends so I don't lose my parenting time since I only have my son four days a month. He said no, no makeup and he will take him

A: Life changes and amendments to parenting time orders are common. In an ideal world, when you discussed the wrestling enrollment, you would have agreed to enrolling him with the stipulation that you'll amend the order to include a limit to how much you will drive to sporting events. At this point, you can still file a motion requesting that provision to be changed. Keep in mind that if you refuse to go to the weekend sporting events, you may end up in a dispute regarding parenting time. Will you forego your parenting time on weekends that your son has an out of state wrestling match? That may hurt your bond with your son, who then ends up supporting your son during events that your son loves and when your son really needs the love and support from a parent. Just a consideration.
