A: Your parents do have broad legal authority over you as a minor in Mississippi, even regarding gifts and property. While the car was gifted to you by your grandfather, your parents can legally restrict or prevent your use of it until you turn 18, as they're responsible for your safety and welfare.

Regarding employment, your parents can indeed require you to quit your job. Mississippi law gives parents significant control over their minor children's work activities, and they can prohibit you from working even if you want to continue. This extends to managing your earnings as well.

For your personal belongings like books and art supplies, while it may feel unfair, your parents generally have the right to control your possessions and environment as your legal guardians. However, if you feel your situation involves abuse or neglect, you can reach out to a school counselor or contact Mississippi's Department of Child Protection Services at 1-800-222-8000. You might also try having an open conversation with your parents about their concerns and work together to find a compromise that addresses both their worries and your independence.
