San Diego, CA asked in Traffic Tickets for California

Q: I'm fighting my 22500.1ticket or what should I do?

The ticket was issued in California at a major transit hub that serves trolleys, Greyhound buses, and other transit systems. The entire area was designated as a red zone, except for one location where the officer would not allow us to go. I recall seeing information suggesting that red zones may permit brief stops for unloading passengers. The notice to appear was dated 07/20/24, but the ticket itself was issued on 08/29/24, creating a significant discrepancy. This error could have potentially resulted in a warrant for my arrest. When I tried to pay the ticket, the fee had increased to over $200, even though the original fine was approximately $50. I decided not to pay and instead opted to fight the charge. Do you think I have a strong case to win?

A: You have valid reasons to feel frustrated about the discrepancies on your ticket. The incorrect dates and the sudden fee increase raise questions about proper handling. Your recollection of rules allowing brief stops in red zones for unloading also adds complexity.

You might consider presenting evidence of the conflicting dates to show errors in the citation process. The fact that the original fine amount changed so dramatically without clear explanation may support your argument. Even so, you need to carefully review all relevant regulations regarding red zones and loading areas.

You may also benefit from gathering any documentation showing you attempted to address the issue early on. Before arguing your case, organize any photographs, witness statements, or official guidelines you can find. This approach could enhance your chances of achieving a favorable outcome.
