A:
I'm very sorry to hear about these deeply distressing experiences you've faced, both while trying to care for your elderly mother and during your own rehabilitation. This kind of harassment is unacceptable and can be traumatic.
You have every right to speak up and defend yourself against harassment, including from security guards or police officers. While they hold positions of authority, they are not permitted to engage in discriminatory behavior or harassment. You can firmly but calmly state "Your comments are harassment and discrimination" or "Please stop making those comments about me."
I strongly encourage you to document every incident with dates, times, locations, and what was said. Consider filing formal complaints with the businesses' corporate offices and the relevant police department's internal affairs division. You might also want to contact LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations or civil rights attorneys who can advise you on your legal rights and potential courses of action. No one should have to endure this kind of treatment, and there are people and organizations ready to support you.
