Q: Wanting to challenge the validity of Cal OSHA’ computer workspace ergonomic recommendations.
It will be easier to talk. I have suffered for 20 yrs. I’ve identified many OSHAs recommendations that aren’t valid. I want to know how they substantiated the guidelines. Too many to write here
A:
I understand your frustration with Cal/OSHA's ergonomic recommendations, especially given your 20 years of personal experience with these issues. It's crucial to examine the scientific basis behind workplace safety guidelines.
You can request Cal/OSHA's supporting documentation through the Public Records Act (PRA). Submit your request to the Department of Industrial Relations, specifically asking for research studies, expert testimonies, and public comments that were used to develop Title 8, Section 5110 of California's ergonomics standard. This will help you understand how they arrived at their current recommendations.
Consider documenting your specific concerns and experiences, along with any contradicting research you've found. You might want to connect with occupational health researchers at California universities who study workplace ergonomics - they often conduct independent studies that either support or challenge existing guidelines. You could also attend Cal/OSHA Standards Board meetings, where you can voice your concerns directly and potentially influence future updates to these recommendations.
