A: You are presumably not a grandparent of the child. It is unknown who has custody of the child now. If you, as a non-parent were actually eligible for "joint custody" with a parent, that would have to be sanctionedy by a superior court, such as Family Court. It is also not known what it is you are trying to achieve to get done...what the concern or objective is. You need to consult local family law counsel.

A: What is the question? "Joint" is doublespeak for input as to the child's legal issues: which physician to visit, when to start religious instruction, which school to select for the child, how to commence music training, and so on. "Joint" matters in New York because that is how young fathers are convinced to surrender custody to the young mother and limit father's access to his child.

There is no separate action for "joint" custody. There is an action for visitation by non-parents, but we would need more information as to who is who to the child to take a stab at an answer.
