Asked in Family Law for Alabama

Q: Hi, I would like to change my name on birth certificate, my legal documents are correct but I don't have a court order.

I am a US citizen living in the Netherlands. I was born in Alabama and have a registered address in California. I changed my name in Thailand sometime around 2007 and submitted a name change request with the US embassy in Thailand, my driver's license (expired) and passport have my correct name. My social security card was also updated to the correct name in 2014. however, I never requested a change on my birth certificate. I recently reached out to Alabama Vital Records and they said I need a change order/petition.

As I am all over the place, I am not sure which court to reach out and what procedures I need to do since my legal name on all other documents are all correct. Thank you in advance.

A: This is difficult since you are reside outside of the US. You do not meet the residency requirements for an Alabama name change. Seek out a California attorney for advice.
